south african elections

home of the south African president

The next South African general election will be held on a date in April–July 2014 to elect a new National Assembly, as well as new provincial legislatures in each province.

When we voted in the historic first democratic election in 1994, we were excited because we were free to choose our own government and leaders. We thought of the changes that our votes would immediately bring. We did again in 1999 a few more times thereafter.

Affirmative action

time

Affirmative action is a way of making the workplace more representative and fair. It makes sure that qualified people from designated groups have equal opportunities in the workplace. In South Africa.

Affirmative action, refers to policies that take factors including "race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.  Into consideration in order to benefit an underrepresented group "in areas of employment, education, and business. The concept of affirmative action was introduced in the early 1960s as a way to combat racial discrimination in the hiring process, and in 1967, the concept was expanded to include gender.

In some other regions, specific quotas do not exist; instead, members of minorities are given preference in selection processes. Often, university scholarships are earmarked for members of a specific minority. The nature of affirmative action policies varies from region to region. Some countries, such as India, use a quota system, whereby a certain percentage of jobs or school vacancies must be set aside for members of a race, caste or other protected group.

What to do in case of a car accident

car accident

  • Safety is your top priority. Your first priority is to maintain the safety of everyone involved in the accident and to take actions to prevent more smash-ups and injuries.

  • If the accident is minor and the cars are still functioning, move them off or to the side of the road.

  • Check for injuries. Ask everyone who was in the car with you if they’re okay. Then check on the driver and passengers of the other car. Call  for an ambulance if needed.
  •  Call the police, even if the accident is minor.

  • Do not sign any document unless it's for the police or your insurance agent.

  • Be polite, but don't tell anyone the accident was your fault, even if you think it was.

  • State only the facts, and limit your discussion of the accident to the police and your insurance agent.

  • If possible, don't leave the accident scene before the police and other drivers do.

Africa's silent killer

pancrease

Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both.

Types of diabetes

  • Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease where the body's immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. People with type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin and require lifelong insulin injections for survival. The disease can occur at any age, although it mostly occurs in children and young adults. Type 1 diabetes is sometimes referred to as 'juvenile onset diabetes' or 'insulin dependent diabetes'.

  • Type 2 diabetes is associated with hereditary factors and lifestyle risk factors including poor diet, insufficient physical activity and being overweight or obese. People with type 2 diabetes may be able to manage their condition through lifestyle changes; however, diabetes medications or insulin injections may also be required to control blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes occurs mostly in people aged over 40 years old; however, the disease is also becoming increasingly prevalent in younger age groups.

Diabetes facts

  • Diabetes is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood.
  • Insulin produced by the pancreas lowers blood glucose.
  • Absence or insufficient production of insulin causes diabetes.
  • Symptoms of diabetes include increased urine output, thirst, hunger, and fatigue.
  • Diabetes is diagnosed by blood sugar (glucose) testing.
  • The major complications of diabetes are both acute and chronic.
